• The final round of Short Term Scientific Missions is opened. The candidates are requested to fill the STSM request form on https://e-services.cost.eu/stsm web page. We expect 6-8 STSMs to be financed. All STSMs proposals should be submitted by  NEW DEADLINE DATE 30.04.2018 (end of the day). All STMS must be finished by November 18th (this is the end of our COST Action) and the reports should be handed in and approved within 1 month after that. One may find details on STSM in the COST Vademecum (http://www.cost.eu/Vademecum). The way to submit the STSM proposal is done through the https://e-services.cost.eu/stsm web page. Please spread the information. Due to limited  funds for the last call, after collecting all submissions, they will be evaluated to select best ones.

  • May - The CM1403 COST network announces another round of STSMs. We expect candidates to send their requests by 29th of September (NEW DATE). All details on applications, requirements, rules to apply and to finalize the STSM are presented in details here. We will announce the list of sucessful candidates in the first days of July.

  • February - The MC online vote regarding the approval of the CM1403 Work and Budget Plan for GP 4 (2017-05-01 to 2018-04-30) was approved, including the plan for 12 new STSM, 1 training workshop and 4 meetings. The Voting Status can be viewed by following the following link (passoword required). The COST Association will now sign a Grant Agreement with the Grant Holder on this basis.
  • The  2nd General Meeting European Upconversion Network will take place in Aveiro June 29-30, 2017. The organizers, Professor Luis Carlos and dr Helena de Oliveira have established a very nice web page with useful information.
  • Upconvertion related International Conferences in 2017 - there are a few very interesting conferences or special sessions related to upconverting nanomaterials.

  • April - special session on MRS2017, Phoenix, Arisona, USA

  • August - Internation Conference on Luminescence, Brasil

  • November - SHIFT 2017, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain - "SHIFT 2017" International Conference shows up as a cutting-edge multidisciplinary platform to gather recent achievements by foremost researchers leading the way for spectral shaping of light to be a future key technology, from photovoltaics, photocatalysis, artificial photosynthesis and solar fuels generation to photodynamic cancer therapy, nano-thermometry and bio-imaging. Warm and sunny Tenerife (Canary Islands) welcomes in November 2017 to make a significant shift to state-of-the-art spectral shaping for biomedical and energy applications.

  • October - ANNOUNCEMENT OF TRAINING SCHOOL IN TURKU 2017 (by prof.Tero Soukka - Finland)

COST Action CM1403 (The European upconversion network: from design of photon-upconverting nanomaterials to biomedical applications) organizes a training school on "Upconverting nanoparticles in bioaffinity assays - from bioconjugation to luminescence readout" in Turku, Finland, 3. - 5. April 2017. Here you'll find the preliminary call for participation and instructions how to apply.

The training school will focus on hands-on training in laboratory, but includes also few selected lectures.

Laboratory training topics:

  • Conjugating proteins to UCNPs
  • UCNP conjugate characterization: concentration measurement and electrophoretic separation
  • Bioaffinity assays using UCNPs

Lecture topics:

  • Theory of quantum yield measurements (Dr. Ute Resch-Genger, Germany)
  • Scattering of nanoparticles (Dr. Christian Würth, Germany)
  • Electrophoretic separation of UCNPs (Dr. Antonín Hlavácek, Czech Republic)
  • Instrument calibration and standardization (Dr. Ute Resch-Genger, Germany)

Due to limited laboratory space and equipment available the participation will be restricted to 20 participants - this is the reason why we announce a preliminary call for participation with application deadline already on Tuesday 15th November 2016.

  • October - 6 STSM proposals have been approved for realisation in 2016/2017

  • September - our UPCON 2016 conference was described by prof.Dayong Jin in the News & Views of the latest issue of Nature photonics - "Bright future for upconversion"
  • July - The budget of our COST action enables to announce the next call for Short Term Scientific Missions. However, there is rising interest in these STSMs and due to limited budget, we'll be able to support only 5-10 proposals only, depending on the requested support. The details how to prepare the STSM proposal is available from our web page. Due to holiday time, the deadline for submitting the proposals is set to Friday 16.09.2016, which we believe is sufficient to organize everything. The reviews will be done ASAP and the information about the outcome will be announced by the end of September.

  • May - during the UPCON'16 conference, a COST CM14030 Action logo competition took place. The winning logo has been prepared by dr Federico Herrera, from Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB-UNL), Oeiras, Portugal. The logo of the COST action and of the COST (for your use in the presentations) can be found here.
